The Executive Chairman,Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has congratulated Edo parapowerlifter Esther Onyema on her silver medal-winning performance at the just concluded, 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Edo state Sports Commission boss said he was impressed by the performance of the Edo athlete at Glasgow games,describing the medal as a significant achievement for both Edo State and Nigeria,saying that it underscores the state’s growing status as a breeding ground for world-class athletes.
Enabulele commended Onyema’s determination, discipline and consistency, describing her performance as an inspiration to younger athletes across the country.
“Esther Onyema has once again demonstrated that she is a world class athlete once again on the international stage. Her outstanding performance is a source of immense pride to Edo State and Nigeria. She has shown that with hard work, discipline and and motivation,our athletes can compete favourably against the very best in the world,” he said.
Enabulele reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to talent development, promising sustained investment in programmes aimed at discovering and nurturing athletes capable of winning honours for Edo State and Nigeria at major international competitions.
Onyema secured the silver medal in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, lifting 125kg to finish with 115.5 points, helping Nigeria record a one-two finish in the category. Fellow Nigerian Esther Nworgu claimed the gold medal, while England’s Olivia Broome settled for bronze with a lift of 119kg and 106.6 points.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games held from July 23 to August 2, with Team Nigeria finishing 7th after recording notable successes across ten sporting events.
