Nigeria Women Football League champions Edo Queens FC on Monday night began the 2026 CAF Champions League qualifiers on a bright note, following their commanding 7–0 victory over AS Garde Nationale of Niger Republic in their opening match WAFU-B tournament in Burkina Faso
The Nigerians were assertive throughout the encounter as their prolific striker Chioma Moses opened scoring within five minutes into the encounter.
Moses doubled the advantage deep into first-half stoppage time when she calmly converted a spot kick in the 45+3rd minute to give Edo Queens a comfortable 2–0 lead into half time break.
The Queens resumed the second half with even greater intensity, as Atume Doosuur struck twice in quick succession to increase the tally for Edo Queens. She scored in the 47th minute and got her brace in the 56th minute to make it 4–0.
Aminat Folorunsho also registered her name on the scores sheet after netting a fine one in the 62nd minute to extend the lead for Edo Queens.
Moses completed her hat-trick in the 76th minute, giving the Nigerian champions six goals advantage before Oluwakemi Adegbuyi struck to complete the route deep into stoppage time to give Edo Queens a resounding victory.
The hattrick earned Chioma Moses Woman of the Match award after the match.
The 7-0 emphatic result sent Edo Queens top of Group B ahead of Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies on goal difference.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies on the other hand defeated ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire 1-0.
Edo Queens will be heading to the second fixture on against Code D’voire side ASEC Mimosas on Thursday with confidence. Kickoff time is 3pm.
The top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals on September 2nd, with the final and third-place matches scheduled for September 5th. The tournament’s winner represents WAFU-B at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League finals in South Africa.
In a post match interview,the stand-in technical manager of the Edo Queens Kennedy Boboye heaped praise on the girls for their superlative performance. He said that he was not surprised by the seven goals his side recorded, noting that the team is a high scoring side when they have the opportunity.
” Let me commend the girls for a job well done. I was not surprised about the goals. We did something similar during the super six and in some of the friendly matches we played before coming to Burkina Faso.
I hope we carry the same mentality to the remaining games. We now focus on the Thursday match.” He said.
