The first chapter of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered dramatic twists, emerging contenders and early disappointments, with Ghana making a stunning entry into the global top 10 while Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal suffered a major rankings collapse.
Following the completion of the opening matchday, all 48 participating nations have now taken to the pitch, providing the first comprehensive assessment of the tournament’s competitive landscape through the Power Performance Score matrix.
The ranking system, which goes beyond traditional results, evaluates teams based on match outcomes, goal difference, opponent strength, pre-tournament expectations and disciplinary records, producing a detailed picture of early World Cup form.
Sweden emerged as the surprise leaders after a commanding 5-1 victory over Tunisia, while Germany, Argentina and Australia completed the top four positions with impressive opening performances.
England also made a powerful statement, climbing into fifth place after a thrilling 4-2 triumph over Croatia, while France and the United States maintained their status among the tournament’s leading contenders.
However, one of the biggest stories of Matchday 1 came from Africa, as Ghana stormed into ninth position after defeating Panama 1-0.
The Black Stars, ranked among the lower expectations heading into the tournament, earned significant recognition for their disciplined and determined victory over a higher-ranked opponent. Despite receiving a yellow card, Ghana’s performance was rewarded heavily by the ranking model, placing them ahead of several established football giants.
Ivory Coast also strengthened Africa’s impressive opening showing, securing 10th place after their narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador.
Meanwhile, Portugal endured one of the biggest setbacks of the opening round. Entering the tournament as the world’s fifth-ranked team, Cristiano Ronaldo’s side could only manage a 1-1 draw against debutants DR Congo.
The result, combined with three yellow cards and failure to meet high pre-match expectations, saw Portugal fall dramatically to 30th position.
DR Congo, in contrast, enjoyed a memorable World Cup debut, climbing to 18th place after frustrating one of football’s elite nations. Their disciplined defensive display and ability to secure a point against Portugal earned them significant recognition.
Other notable performances included Colombia’s convincing 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, Morocco’s impressive draw against Brazil, Egypt’s resilience against Belgium, and Cape Verde’s historic goalless draw with Spain.
Spain suffered one of the biggest statistical setbacks of the opening round after being held by Cape Verde. Despite avoiding defeat, the result carried a heavy expectation penalty, leaving La Roja ranked 32nd.
At the other end of the table, Tunisia, Curaçao and Paraguay occupied the bottom positions after heavy defeats. Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curaçao was the most emphatic attacking display of Matchday 1, while Sweden’s five-goal victory ensured they claimed the early tournament leadership.
