All is now set for the commencement of maiden edition of Edo State Chess League as the organisers have scheduled June 26th, 2026 as kick off date at the National Gymnasium Sports Complex limit Road Benin City.
As part of the sports development programme rolled out by the State government as a tool for capacity building, the CEO of Brainybrain Chess Foundation Mrs. Omoragbon Iyobosa in collaboration with Aidia Sports are organizing
the competition for young Chess players, and as well for talent discovery in the State.
In a statement released by the Edo Chess Association in Benin, the President of Aidia Sports comrade Aituari Igbinedion, who is also the Vice President of Brainybrain Chess Foundation said that all logistics needed to make the competition a huge success have been put in place.
According to him: “This is the first time in the history of Chess in Edo State as it is the maiden edition of Edo State Chess League Championship. We are deeply involved because we are core sports administrators who want to practically contribute to talent discovery and nurturing of same in our state.
” We decided to put our heads together to come up with this initiatives to contribute our own quota to the development of sports particularly Chess in Edo State. We need to develop our own, Edo State is blessed with sporting talents.
“The aims and objectives of this league is to help Chess players develop themselves in the game. A lot of people see Chess as a lazy man’s game, but do you know that Chess is one of the most difficult games because of it’s brain tasking nature. Chess is for intelligent people. So for me, I see it as the best game.”
“This Chess League is aimed at catching them young and helping them to build their career and skills to limelight on the game and also help them to achieve their dreams and aspiration of becoming World class Chess players. I tell you in few years time, Edo Chess athletes will be Champions in Nigeria and abroad.”
He also said that the Chess League Championship is open to all schools in and around Edo State.
It is expected to commence on June 26th, 2026 in Benin- City.
