In his characteristic disposition toward appreciating hard working and disciplined athletes, the Executive Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission Hon Amadin Desmond Enabulele yesterday received the trio of Osaretin Godwin, Divine Ogbe and Esther Godwin with a special recognition for their cycling exploits at the recently concluded African Para and Track Championship in Abuja.
Speaking during the brief reception ceremony at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin,the Edo Sports Commission boss described cyclists Osaretin Godwin,Divine Ogbe and Esther Godwin as golden girls. He commended them for their show of strong character and discipline while representing the country and the State at international stage.
Enabulele said that hewas impressed bythe performance and achievements of the athletes and their coach, commending them for bringing pride to both Edo State and Nigeria.
”You have represented Nigeria excellently, and we are proud of what you have achieved. What you have won can never be taken away from you. Set new targets for yourselves and continue striving for greater heights and I assure you of Government support”, Enabulele said.
The Sports Commission chairman stated that the commission would provide immediate financial support to encourage the athletes while discussions continue on broader measures to enhance their development and preparation for future competitions.
He urged the young cyclists to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their sporting careers, emphasizing that the Edo State Sports Commission will continue to invest in grassroots sports and nurturing athletes to stardom.
The three Athletes from Edo State delivered an outstanding performance for Nigeria at the 2026 CAC African Track Cycling Championship (Para and Able Categories) held in Abuja, emerging among the competition’s biggest starrs, reinforcing the state’s growing reputation as sports power house in the country.
Leading the charge for Nigeria in the junior women’s category was Osaretin Godwin, who produced a remarkable performance by winning five individual gold medals and two team gold medals, finishing the championship with an impressive haul of seven gold and two silver medals. Her compatriot, Divine Ogbe also excelled, claiming two gold, two silver, and four bronze medals, just ass Esther Godwin added another gold medal to Nigeria’s tally.
In the Para category, rising star Favour Ojieabu showcased her talent by winning two gold medals and one silver medal,strengthening her prospects of representing Nigeria at Commonwealth Games.
Speaking on the athletes’ achievements, Coach Okoro Angela praised the determination and resilience displayed by the cyclists throughout the championship. He noted that Osaretin Godwin’s performances were particularly remarkable, especially considering the challenges she overcame on her path to victory.
According to the coach, Osaretin’s success has earned her valuable qualification points for major international competitions, including future continental events. She described her victory over some of Africa’s most established cyclists as evidence of her immense potentials.
Coach Okoro also highlighted the need for increased support, improved training facilities, and continuous athlete development programme to help the cyclists achieve even greater success at the upcoming All Africa Games and other international championships.
